Thomas Earl Petty (October 20, 1950 – October 2, 2017) was an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and record producer best known as the leader of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Known for his distinctive voice, memorable songwriting, and blend of rock, folk, and Southern influences, Petty became one of the most successful and respected rock musicians of his generation.
Early Life
Tom Petty was born in Gainesville, Florida. As a young teenager he became fascinated with rock and roll after meeting Elvis Presley, who was filming the movie Follow That Dream in Florida. Inspired by that encounter, Petty decided to pursue music.
During his teenage years he played in several local bands, including Mudcrutch, which later became the foundation for his most famous group.
