Elvis Presley (1935–1977) was an American singer and actor whose revolutionary blend of rock ’n’ roll, country, blues, and gospel made him one of the most influential entertainers in music history.
Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis began his recording career at Sun Records in Memphis in 1954. His distinctive voice, energetic performances, and charismatic stage presence quickly made him a sensation. Hits such as “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Hound Dog,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Love Me Tender,” and “Suspicious Minds” helped earn him the enduring title “The King of Rock ’n’ Roll.”
Elvis also became a major movie star and, after serving in the U.S. Army, continued a hugely successful career that included his celebrated 1968 Comeback Special and years of sold-out performances in Las Vegas.
Elvis Presley died at his home, Graceland, in Memphis on August 16, 1977, at the age of 42. His enormous influence on popular music and culture continues today, making him one of the most recognizable and celebrated performers of all time.
