Johnny Winter (February 23, 1944 – July 16, 2014) was an American blues guitarist, singer, songwriter, and producer from Beaumont, Texas. Renowned for his fiery electric guitar playing, powerful vocals, and masterful slide guitar technique, Winter became one of the most influential blues-rock musicians of his generation.
Winter rose to national prominence in 1969 after signing with Columbia Records and appearing at the Woodstock Festival. His albums Johnny Winter, Second Winter, and Still Alive and Well established him as a major force in blues-rock. He was also known for his high-energy live performances and collaborations with artists such as Rick Derringer.
A passionate admirer of traditional blues, Winter played an important role in revitalizing the careers of legendary bluesman Muddy Waters, producing Waters’ acclaimed albums Hard Again and I’m Ready, both of which won Grammy Awards.
Throughout his career, Winter remained devoted to the blues, recording and touring well into the 21st century. His final studio album, Step Back, was released shortly after his death and featured collaborations with numerous prominent musicians. Johnny Winter died in Switzerland on July 16, 2014, at the age of 70. He is remembered as one of the great American electric blues guitarists.
